How Do Burial Insurance Plans Work?

Burial insurance, which is also known as final expense or funeral insurance, is a type of small whole life policy meant to cover your end-of-life expenses.

The premiums always remain the same, and the policy will never expire due to age.

The requirements to qualify are simple because there is no medical exam. In most cases, applications are approved on the spot or within a few business days.

There are two types of plans that companies offer:

  • Guaranteed acceptance: You don’t have to answer any health questions because the insurer guarantees your approval. There will be a two-year waiting period, during which death (except accidental death) will result only in a refund of your premiums.
  • Simplified issue: You answer health questions which determine your eligibility. If approved, there is no waiting period, which means you’re fully covered right away.

When you die, the insurance company will disburse the funds (tax-free) to your beneficiaries. Please note that there are no restrictions on how they spend that money and are entitled to keep any remaining funds.

The Free Look Period In Washington And The FTC Funeral Rule

Washington requires life insurance policies to allow for a 10-day free look period. During this time, you have the right to cancel and receive a refund if you’ve paid any premiums.

On a national level, the Federal Trade Commission implemented the Funeral Rule, which regulates how funeral homes conduct business.

It requires them to provide transparent prices either in writing or over the phone. Also, they must accept (and cannot charge a fee) products from outside sources. For example, you can buy an urn or casket online and have it shipped to the funeral home, which must accept it. Finally, they must allow consumers to pick and choose whatever products and services they want.
