How Does Burial Life Insurance Work?

A burial policy is a type of no-exam whole life insurance meant to cover your funeral expenses or other final bills. The final result will be a cash payout to your beneficiaries, which they can use for any purpose (they also retain any remaining funds).

Whole life policies always have a fixed premium, and the coverage is guaranteed to last forever. In addition, cash value will accumulate over time, which you can borrow from and use as you see fit.

There are two types of final expense life insurance:

  • Simplified issue: There are health questions that, depending on how you answer, determine your eligibility. If approved, simplified options can have no waiting period, meaning you will be fully insured from the day you make the first premium payment.
  • Guaranteed issue: You do not need to answer any health questions, and you cannot be denied coverage due to any current or prior health conditions. There will always be a two-year waiting period. If you die during the waiting period, the insurance company will refund your premiums plus roughly 10% interest. Please note that no insurance company offers a guaranteed acceptance policy with no waiting period.

The Free Look Period In Alaska And The FTC Funeral Rule

In Alaska, life insurance policies have a minimum free look period of ten days. During this time, you can refuse a recently purchased policy for any reason and receive a refund of any payment made.

On another note, be mindful of the FTC’s Funeral Rule, as it is beneficial during the funeral planning process.

In short, it requires funeral homes to abide by certain practices, such as but not limited to:

  • Provide transparent prices upon request, whether in person or by phone.
  • Allow consumers to purchase caskets or urns from third-party sources.
  • Give consumers the ability to choose the products and services they want, rather than being limited to pre-packaged options.
