How Does Burial Insurance Work?

A burial life insurance policy is a type of whole life insurance that offers small death benefit options and very lenient underwriting. There are no medical exams, and most health issues will not prevent acceptance.

Don't Forget
A burial policy may also be referred to as funeral or final expense insurance.

The proceeds from the policy are generally meant to pay for end-of-life expenses. However, your loved ones may spend the money on anything, including medical bills, debts, or anything else. Also, your beneficiaries may keep any leftover money.

Generally, you only have to fill out a basic health questionnaire. Plans with health questions offer no waiting period if you’re accepted.

On the flip side, there are policies without health questions. Those are called guaranteed acceptance because you can’t be denied due to pre-existing conditions. Plans with guaranteed approval always have a two-year waiting period.

Death during the waiting period will only result in your beneficiaries receiving the premiums you paid plus interest (10% is standard).

Senior final expense policies have a fixed cost, so the price will never change. In addition, the coverage lasts a lifetime, and it builds cash value.

The Free Look Period In Arkansas And The FTC Funeral Rule

The Arkansas Department of Insurance requires (Ark. Code Ann. § 23-79-112) that all life insurance contracts include a ten-day free-look provision.

The free look provision entitles the policyholder to the right to refuse any policy they have bought and receive a refund of any premiums.

That means if you buy the wrong final expense insurance policy or change your mind, you have the guaranteed right to cancel it and get a refund.

Another law to be aware of that is helpful in the funeral planning process is the FTC Funeral Rule. This national law requires funeral homes to provide written or verbal pricing.

In addition, consumers have the right to select and choose which services they want, rather than having to accept prepackaged funerals that the funeral home may offer.
