How Do Burial Policies Work?

A burial insurance policy is a type of whole life insurance that offers easy qualification, small coverage options, and fast payouts. The ultimate goal with these policies is to pay for funeral expenses. However, the policy will eventually pay out cash to your beneficiaries, which they can spend without restrictions of any kind.

Being a whole life policy, the rates will never change; cash value accrues, and the coverage lasts for your entire life.

Qualification is very simple because no medical exam is required. In most cases, applications are approved either instantly or within a couple of business days.

Some policies have health questions which, depending on how you answer, determine if you’re approved or declined. If approved, there would be no waiting period.

On the other hand, some plans have no health questions and guaranteed approval. These policies always have a two-year waiting period. Any natural cause of death during the waiting period will result in the insurer refunding premiums plus roughly 10% interest.

The Free Look Period In Minnesota And The FTC Funeral Rule

Under Minnesota law, all life insurance policies have a ten-day free look provision. During this time, you can cancel the policy and receive a refund of any money paid. This protects you in case you realize you were defrauded, misled, or simply changed your mind.

On another note, the FTC Funeral Rule assists consumers during the funeral planning process. In short, it requires funeral homes to provide written or verbal prices upon request. Furthermore, they must accept products from outside vendors (caskets, urns, flowers, or anything else).

They must also allow consumers to select which products and services they want rather than forcing them to choose from pre-selected funeral packages.
