How Do Burial Insurance Plans Work?

Final expense insurance is a type of whole life insurance that is primarily meant to cover your funeral costs. However, the money can technically be used for anything.

When you die, the insurance company will pay out the death benefit in the form of a cash payment to your beneficiaries, which they can use for any expense (not just funeral costs). Additionally, they are entitled to keep any money not used on your final expenses.

There are two types of funeral insurance that companies may offer:

  • Guaranteed acceptance: There is no medical exam and no health questions that you must answer. Since the insurer is unaware of your health history, a two-year waiting period will always be in effect. Any non-accidental death during the waiting period will cause the insurer to only refund your premiums. They will not pay out the death benefit until you’ve been alive for more than two years.
  • Simplified issue: There is no medical exam, but you must answer health questions which determine if you’re approved or declined. These plans, if approved, have no waiting period, which means the insurer will immediately pay out the full death benefit for any cause of death except suicide.

Since these policies are a type of whole life insurance, there is a guarantee that the premium and death benefit will not change, and the coverage never expires.

The Free Look Period In North Dakota And The FTC Funeral Rule

In North Dakota, life insurance policies have a 20-day free look period. After receiving the policy, you have 20 days to review and cancel the policy if you so desire. Additionally, if you do cancel, you’re entitled to a full refund of any premiums.

On another note, the Funeral Rule, administered by the Federal Trade Commission, governs funeral homes. It requires them to provide consumers with transparent pricing information when requested. Additionally, consumers have the right to choose only the products and services they want, and they can purchase products such as urns or caskets from third-party providers.
