How Do Burial Policies Work?

A burial policy is a type of whole life insurance meant to cover your funeral and other final expenses. When you pass away, your beneficiaries will receive a tax-free cash payment, which they can spend on anything (not just funeral costs). Also, if your family does not use all the money to cover your final expenses, they are entitled to keep whatever is left over.

There are two types of funeral insurance that companies may offer:

  • Guaranteed acceptance: No medical exam is required, and no health questions need to be answered. Because approval is guaranteed, there is a two-year waiting period (with all insurers). If you die during the waiting period for any non-accidental reason, the insurance company will merely refund your premiums.
  • Simplified issue: These plans also don’t require a medical exam, but you must answer health questions. If you’re approved, there is no waiting period, which means you’re fully covered immediately.

Lastly, since these are whole life policies, the premiums cannot change (nor can the death benefit), and the insurance remains in effect indefinitely.

The Free Look Period In Pennsylvania And The FTC Funeral Rule

Life insurance policies in Pennsylvania always have a ten-day free look period. During this period, you can cancel your policy and receive a refund if any money was paid.

When it comes to funeral planning, there is a national law known as the Funeral Rule, which is administered by the Federal Trade Commission. It forces funeral homes to adhere to certain procedures, such as but not limited to:

  • Provide written, transparent prices for all products and services prior to taking payment.
  • Allow consumers to opt out of pre-packed funerals and select only what they want.
  • They must accept products from outside sources (such as buying a casket from Costco).
