Burial Life Insurance Options For People With HIV Or AIDS

If you have HIV or AIDS, the only way you can usually get final expense life insurance is by buying a policy without health questions (guaranteed acceptance).

Since the insurer knows nothing about your health, the HIV won’t cause them to decline you.

Keep in mind that all guaranteed issue life insurance policies have a two-year waiting period. If you die during the first 24 months, the insurance company will only refund your premiums plus approximately 10% interest.

Also, guaranteed acceptance policies are always going to be whole life insurance plans. Whole life policy rates never increase, and the coverage lasts your entire life. Additionally, they build cash value, which you can borrow against as it accumulates.

In most cases, guaranteed acceptance policies have a maximum coverage of $25,000. The only company that offers more guaranteed coverage is the AARP final expense insurance program (they offer $30K).

That said, you can always buy multiple policies from various companies to achieve a total amount of coverage beyond $25,000.

Can You Get Final Expense Insurance With No Waiting Period With HIV?

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to qualify for burial insurance with no waiting period if you have AIDS or HIV.

Nearly every insurer will only offer a modified plan with a two-year waiting period; however, it is possible to find partial coverage, but it’s rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, a person with HIV can potentially qualify for a traditional term life or whole life insurance policy. For example, Guardian Life offers coverage to HIV patients who meet the criteria. Understand, however, that it’s hard to qualify for and very few insurance companies offer any coverage to someone with this condition.

No. Once HIV has transitioned into AIDS, traditional life insurance options are all completely unavailable.

Final expense insurance policies will pay out the prescribed death benefit if you die from HIV or AIDS. Keep in mind that if you die during the two-year waiting period (which is inevitable for HIV patients), the insurer will only refund your premiums. However, assuming you live for more than two years, the full death benefit will pay out for any cause of death.

Our Insurance Review Methodology

Every company we review has an overall score that illustrates how well it stands out in the market relative to its competitors. These scores are not subjective. Instead, we utilize a defined 5-star scoring system that applies a weighted average of particular factors, all of which are outlined below and on our review methodology page.

We measure the price of a company’s most popular they promote relative to its competitors. The closeness of their cost to other companies determines the final score. Read a full breakdown of the price of coverage factor on our review methodology page.

This factor assesses whether a company offers immediate coverage and, if so, how difficult it is to qualify for it. Read a full breakdown of the no waiting period coverage factor on our review methodology page.

A company’s financial strength is based on its rating with A.M. Best. Read a full breakdown of the financial strength factor on our review methodology page.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint index measures an insurer’s frequency of consumer complaints compared to the rest of the market. The score the insurer receives is based on how it stacks up to the median score of other insurers. Read a full breakdown of the NAIC complaint index factor on our review methodology page.
