How Does Each Type Of Policy Work?
Life insurance is just a general term. It’s similar to the word “automobile”. Just as there are many types of automobiles (cars, trucks, SUVs, etc.), there are many types of life insurance. They all have different features, benefits, and costs.
- Term life insurance: A policy that will only last for a number of years or until a certain age. When the policy ends, you are no longer insured. Term life will always be the least expensive type of life insurance.
- Whole life insurance: Permanent coverage that is guaranteed to remain in force forever. Furthermore, the price and death benefit will never increase or decrease. Every payment made will have a small portion directed into what’s called the cash value account. The cash value account will grow with each payment, and it earns interest. The policyholder can withdraw funds from the cash value account at any time and use them any way they desire.
- Universal life insurance: A type of permanent coverage similar to whole life without the guarantees. Where universal life differs from whole life is that you can typically adjust your payments. Also, the cash value growth will heavily influence how long the policy lasts and the minimum required premium you must pay.
It’s essential to choose a policy not based on which one costs the least. Rather, choose based on which type is ideally suited to satisfy your needs. For example, if your goal is to obtain coverage to pay for your final expenses, it would be unwise to buy a term policy. That’s because a term policy will likely expire around age 80.
What good would it be to buy a temporary policy that will likely expire before you die, which then leaves you without coverage to pay for your end-of-life costs? Instead, you should opt for permanent coverage (even though it costs more than term life) so you know for sure that it will be there one day, no matter how old you are when you die.
How To Buy A $300,000 Life Policy
To buy a $300,000 life insurance policy, you’ll likely need to speak with a licensed insurance agent (either in person or via phone). That’s because very few insurers offer an online application that allows you to buy this amount of coverage. Moreover, no insurer will allow you to purchase a policy of this size by mail.
Most providers will have options to buy with or without a medical exam. If you opt for a no-exam option, you’ll only have to answer health questions. However, if you opt for a medical exam, you’ll have to meet with a nurse who will gather a blood and urine sample. In addition, the insurer would request formal copies of all your medical records.
The advantage of a fully underwritten policy (with a medical exam) is that it can, and often does, result in a lower premium. The downside is that you must complete the exam, and approvals typically take 4-6 weeks. A no-exam option will cost more, but approval can be either instant or within a few business days.
