How Do Burial Insurance Policies Work?

A burial policy is a type of whole life insurance that offers small coverage amounts, lenient underwriting, and fast payouts. While these plans are generally meant to pay for end-of-life costs, the payout money can be used for any purpose whatsoever.

When you die, the insurer will pay cash, typically within 24-48 hours, directly to the beneficiaries of your choice.

$50,000 is generally the most coverage you can buy from most providers, but some offer less. A medical exam is never required, but some policies may have a health questionnaire that you must complete. Plans that include health questions will provide full coverage immediately (with no waiting period) once the policy begins.

On the other hand, some plans do not require a health questionnaire, often referred to as “guaranteed acceptance plans.” These guaranteed your approval, but the tradeoff is a two-year waiting period. Any non-accidental death during the waiting period will only result in a refund of your premiums.

Since these are whole life policies, the premiums will never change, the death benefit will not decrease, and the coverage lasts forever.

The Free Look Period In Idaho And The FTC Funeral Rule

Idaho statutes require all life insurance policies to have a free look period that lasts 20 days or more. A policyholder can refuse the policy during this time (for any reason) and receive a refund of any paid premiums.

At the same time, there is a national law known as the FTC Funeral Rule that imposes regulations on funeral homes. In short, it requires the following of funeral homes:

  • Accept third-party products such as urns or caskets.
  • Allow consumers to choose only the products or services they want.
  • Provide written prices upon request
