How Do Burial Insurance Plans Work?

Final expense insurance is a small life insurance policy designed to cover all your end-of-life costs. More specifically, it’s a type of whole life insurance, which means the premiums never increase and the coverage lasts indefinitely.

Don't Forget
Final expense insurance is also commonly known as burial insurance or funeral insurance.

When you die, the insurance provider will quickly pay out the death benefit (tax-free) to the beneficiaries of your choice. If your beneficiaries don’t use all the money for funeral costs, they get to keep whatever is left over.

To qualify, you typically only need to answer some basic health questions. A medical exam is never required. Furthermore, some plans offer guaranteed approval, which means you don’t have to answer any health questions. However, plans with guaranteed approval always have a waiting period that lasts 24 months. Death during the waiting period will result in a refund of the payments you’ve made.

The Free Look Period In Maine And The FTC Funeral Rule

The Maine Legislature requires all life insurance policies sold in the state to include a free look provision that lasts no less than ten days. During these ten days, a policyholder may return the policy for any reason. Furthermore, if they paid any premiums, they are entitled to a full refund.

Regarding funeral planning, the Funeral Rule from the FTC is particularly helpful. First, it requires funeral homes to accept products that you may buy from a third party. For example, if you buy a casket from Costco, the funeral home must accept it. Secondly, funeral homes must provide written and verbal prices upon request.

Last but not least, funeral homes cannot require you to buy entire funeral packages. You have the right to choose only which products and services you want.
