How Do Burial Life Insurance Plans Work?

Final expense life insurance is a policy designed to pay for your end-of-life expenses. These are whole life policies, typically ranging from $2,000 to $50,000, with most insurance providers.

The cash payout is direct to your beneficiaries, who can spend the money on anything (not just funeral costs). Additionally, any remaining funds are theirs to keep.

Don't Forget
Final expense insurance also goes by the name of burial or funeral insurance.

Since the policy is a whole life insurance contract, the coverage remains in effect for the entire life of the insured. Additionally, the premiums remain fixed, and the policy will build cash value that you can withdraw at any time.

The requirements to qualify for a burial policy are very minimal. No medical exams are required, and you typically only have to answer some basic health questions.

At the same time, some policies offer guaranteed acceptance. Those don’t require answering health questions, so you cannot be denied due to previous medical issues.

Plans without health questions always have a two-year waiting period. Death from natural causes during the waiting period will only result in a refund of your premiums.

However, plans with health questions (if approved) have no waiting period.

The Free Look Period In Tennessee And The FTC Funeral Rule

In Tennessee, Title 56 of the insurance code requires that all life insurance contracts include a 10-day free-look provision. That clause grants you the right to return a policy for any reason and to receive a full refund of any money (if you made a payment).

Another law that will assist in the funeral planning process is the FTC Funeral Rule. This law requires funeral homes to provide consumers with written, transparent pricing information. Also, it grants consumers the right to select only the products and services they want from a funeral home. You don’t have to accept a funeral plan they may offer you.
