Baltimore Life Final Expense Insurance Overview

Baltimore Life’s Silver Guard (Silver Guard is just what they named it) final expense product is a whole life insurance policy that is meant to cover someone’s burial or other final expenses.

Because Baltimore Life burial insurance is life insurance, the policy will merely pay out a tax free cash benefit directly to your beneficiary. This gives your family the money necessary to pay for your funeral costs.

As is the case with all forms of life insurance, there are no restrictions how the money is to be used.

Also, if there is money left over, your beneficiary(s) gets to keep it. They can use the money as they see fit.

Baltimore Life Final Expense

It’s A Whole Life Policy So How It Works Is Very Simple

As mentioned above, Baltimore Life funeral insurance is a whole life insurance policy. For that reason, the fine print if you will is very straightforward.

Here’s the pertinent details of the policy:

  • Premiums can never increase
  • Coverage can never decrease
  • Policy cannot expire due to age
  • Company cannot cancel it except for non-payment

Pretty simple right?

They were designed with simplicity in mind. Essentially, once your plan is in place it will never change, and you can always count on it being there to cover your final expenses.

Product Availability

Just like all other insurance companies, Baltimore Life has limitations. From where it’s sold to how much coverage you can buy, you need to be aware of their limitations.

  • States Offered: All 50 & DC except NY
  • Issue Ages: 50-80
  • Face Amount Options: $2,500- $25,000 (varies by age and health rating)
  • 2 Year Waiting Period: No (subject to underwriting approval)
  • Purchase Options: Only through agencies licensed to sell Baltimore Life insurance such as Choice Mutual (It’s not sold direct)

Riders

At no extra charge, Baltimore Life will include a Cash Draft Benefit rider on all policies. However, this rider is only in effect after the policy has been in force for two years or more.

This rider will allow up to $1,000 of the policy’s death benefits to made available soon after the insured’s death while the claim is pending.

There is one optional rider you can elect to add on for addition premiums- the Accidental Death Rider. This rider will double the payable death benefit if the cause of death is specifically from an accident. Unfortunately, the ADR is not available in all states.

This rider is only available for applicants who are age 50-65, and it only lasts until the insured is 70 years old. After age 70, this rider is no longer active.

Baltimore Life Funeral Insurance Underwriting

First, you will never have to take a physical or medical exam to qualify for Baltimore Life’s Silver Guard program. Furthermore, you won’t need to provide your medical records or provide any documentation whatsoever.

Qualification is determined based on the following:

  • Answers to health questions
  • Prescription history check
  • MIB check

Baltimore Life Final Expense

Their primary tool to assess an applicant’s eligibility is their health questionnaire. Beyond that, they will look at your prescription history as a way to validate your health so to speak.

Finally, they will check your MIB file to see if you disclosed any health issues to any other life insurance companies on prior applications.

Baltimore Life has three different plans available. There’s Silver Guard I, Silver Guard II, & Silver Guard III.

Which one you are eligible for is based entirely on your health.

However, before we detail how you could qualify for one of their three plans, you need to know about their “knockout conditions”.

Just like all burial insurance companies that offer immediate coverage, Baltimore Life also has a list of health issues where they will outright decline you for any coverage.

Insider Tip: You can still get final expense coverage from other insurance companies even if you have some of the health issues listed below. Some of these conditions are insurable for immediate coverage, but most of them you could only get coverage via a no health question policy from AIG or a similar company. Just know that if you have some of these conditions, we can still help you!

If you have had, been treated for, taken medication for, or been advised to seek treatment for any of the following, you are not eligible for any coverage with Baltimore Life.

  • Alzheimer’s or dementia
  • Terminal illness with a life expectancy of 12 months or less
  • AIDS, HIV, or any disorder of the immune system
  • Systemic Lupus
  • Been advised to have an organ transplant
  • Currently receiving dialysis
  • Ever been diagnosed with Hepatitis C
  • Currently bedridden
  • Confined to a wheelchair due to a chronic illness or disease
  • Currently in a hospital
  • In a nursing facility, hospice care, assisted living facility, long-term care facility
  • Using or been advised to used oxygen

Silver Guard II and Silver Guard III

Both Silver Guard II & III do not provide full coverage from the very first day. Instead, they will pay out 25% of the face amount if the insured dies within the first 12 months. If death occurs during months 12-24, 50% of the face amount will be payable.

After two years has passed, both plans will pay out 100% for any reason moving forward.

Silver Guard I is less expensive than Silver Guard III, and both cost more than Silver Guard I.

The face amount options for these plans goes as follows:

  • Silver Guard II: $2,500-$15,000
  • Silver Guard III: $2,500-$10,000

First, to be eligible for either of these plans, you must not have any of those knockout conditions above.

Baltimore Life Final Expense

Beyond that, the following conditions will determine if you qualify for Silver Guard II or III.

In the last 2 years, have you been told or have you had a medical diagnosis, received treatment, had symptom(s) or been hospitalized for any of the following:

  1. Heart attack, congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeat, circulatory disorder, aneurysm, or any other disease or condition of the heart or arteries, have you undergone angioplasty or bypass surgery, or have you used a pacemaker?
  2. Uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes or blood sugars, diabetic coma, or any diabetes requiring the use of insulin?
  3. Internal cancer, melanoma, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, kidney disease, liver disease, cirrhosis, chronic lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or emphysema?
  4. Alcoholism or drug abuse?
  5. Stroke, any paralysis, Parkinson’s, mental retardation, psychosis, suicide attempt, disease or disorder of the brain, or any condition affecting or relating to circulation to the brain?

Determining If You Qualify For SG II or SG III If You Have Some Of Those Conditions

Basically, you’ll qualify for II or III if you answer yes to one or more of those health questions. Also, your height to weight ratio will be a factor as well.

You will qualify for Silver Guard II if:

  • Yes to only one of those questions and your height to weight ratio does not fall under the SG II & III build guidelines.
  • No to all the health questions, but your build does fall within the SG II & III build guidelines.

You will qualify for Silver Guard III if:

  • Yes to two of those questions and your height to weight ratio does not fall under the SG II & III build guidelines.
  • Yes to one of the health questions, and your build does fall within the SG II & III build guidelines.

Below is their build chart. If you have a height and weight below these numbers, your build will not be a factor.

When You Should Buy A Baltimore Life Policy

For starters, if you can qualify for their Silver Guard I plan, it’s a great option. We’d highly recommend it. The price would be competitive with what other carriers charge, and you would have no Baltimore Life Final Expensewaiting period.

Kind of like Mutual of Omaha burial insurance, you should jump on a Silver Guard I plan if you can qualify.

Where Baltimore Life really shines however is with their SG II and III plans. We say that because these plans offer some form of instant protection for many very high-risk health issues.

If you have any of the following health conditions, their Silver Guard II & III plans are a fantastic option. All of these health issues would result in a decline or full two year waiting period with other final expense insurance companies.

With Baltimore Life, you would have a policy that pays out 25% of the benefit during year 1 and 50% during year 2.

There are other health situations where their SG II or III plan would be great too. These are just some of the big ones we encounter a lot.

  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Heart attack in the last 12 months
  • Full blown stroke in the last 12 months (TIA mini strokes don’t count)
  • Heart and circulatory surgeries within the last 12 months (angioplasty, stent placement, bypass, etc)
  • Cancer in the last 2 years (cannot currently have cancer)

Again, there are other situations where having Baltimore Life funeral insurance is a great buy. The list is just too long to write them all out.

How To Find The Best Burial Life Insurance Plan For You

If you don’t want your family to be left with a financial burden when you pass, a burial insurance plan can prevent that.

But the question is, how do you find which insurance company is best for you?

Truthfully, it may be Baltimore Life, but it may not be.

Everyone has a unique situation, so one company can’t be best for everyone. That just isn’t possible.

Baltimore Life Final Expense

To find the best policy for you, you need to work with an independent agency that represents at least 10 different final expense companies (the more carriers they have the better).

Here’s the deal

The job of an independent agency is to evaluate your health and goals. They’ll match you with whichever company on the market best fits you. An independent agent does not care which company you go with. All they care about is serving your interests.

The thing to remember is that you cannot do this on your own. Insurance has many moving parts. You need a professional agency licensed with lots of companies to shop around for you to get you the best deal.

At all costs make sure you do not work with a captive agent. Captive agents represent only one company. This will almost ensure you get an inferior deal relative to what you could get by working with an independent agent.

Lastly, just know that you cannot buy these plans directly from the insurance company. They only sell them through agencies. The only kind of final expense insurance that is sold direct without working with an agent is guaranteed issue life insurance.

Those policies cost as much as 300% more, and they ALL have a two year waiting period.

Just make it simple on yourself. Find a good independent agent that works with at least 10 different burial insurance companies and let them go to work for you.

Rick Jonie

I have a group policy through my employer, would you look into additional coverage?

July 6, 2018 at 12:19 pm
    Choice Mutual

    Hi Rick,

It’s great that your employer provides you with a life insurance benefit. However, and to address your question, you should not rely solely on that policy.

We say that for one very simple reason. You are only covered by that policy while you are working. If you ever stop working (regardless of why), you are no longer covered.

Everyone who wants and/or needs life insurance, should obtain a policy on an individual basis. This is the only way to ensure you have your coverage regardless of where you work.

    Hope this helps.
