Key Findings

Here’s what stood out from our survey:

They reflect local pride

Whether it’s the sprawling grounds in New York or a quiet cemetery in Alaska, these places are often deeply tied to their communities.

People go not just to honor the fallen, but to feel closer to someone they knew or the place they call home.

They’re steeped in history

Sites like Arlington and Gettysburg carry more than just names. They hold moments that shaped the country. You can almost hear the echoes of speeches, the weight of decisions made.

These aren’t just burial grounds – they’re historical landmarks.

Even the smaller ones speak volumes

Some of the most moving places aren’t widely known. Cemeteries in states like South Dakota or Vermont may not draw crowds, but they leave an impression.

Black Hills, for example, is simple and stark, but unforgettable in its quiet power.

New doesn’t mean less meaningful

Yellowstone National Cemetery in Montana only opened in 2014, but it’s already become a place of honor.

It’s a wide-open prairie, and a thoughtful layout shows that you don’t need age to convey respect, design, setting, and intention matter.

Scenery makes it all sink in deeper

Cemeteries like the Punchbowl in Hawaii or the one looking out over the Golden Gate in San Francisco are striking.

The natural beauty doesn’t distract – it sharpens the sense of loss and gratitude. The view becomes part of the memory.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t just about tourism or tradition. These cemeteries matter because of what they make people feel. They remind us that service is personal.

That loss is national. And that remembrance doesn’t always need words – it requires presence. Whether surrounded by mountains or the ocean, these grounds quietly ask us to pause – and not forget.

Methodology

We conducted an online panel survey of 3,000 Americans, based on age, gender, and geography. Internal data sources are used to obtain population data sets. We used a two-step process to ensure representativeness through stratified sampling and post-stratification weighting.

Respondents are carefully chosen from a geographically representative online panel of double-opt-in members. This selection is further tailored to meet the precise criteria required for each unique survey. Throughout the survey, we design questions to carefully screen and authenticate respondents, guaranteeing the alignment of the survey with the ideal participants.
